After hinting at the Stingray look with the '61 and '62 Corvette rear end treatments, Chevy finally let loose with the full-boat 1963 Corvette Sting Ray. Remarkably similar to the original concept/racing car, the Sting Ray injected new pizzazz into the Corvette image. The rarest version was the infamous "split-window" coupe - one-half bad visibility, one-half collectors dream - produced only in 1963. FM, in its effort to reproduce in 1:24 scale most of the Corvette model years, pretty much HAD to come out with this coupe. Does anyone ever remember even seeing a '63 roadster? The model is up to the usual FM standard for 'Vettes. Like many of their earlier models, fit and finish is just average. Features are stingy and the detailing is nothing to write home about. Don't get me wrong; this isn't a $10 toy shop knockoff. Any Corvette lover has more than one of these models in his or her collection (including me). It's just time for FM to do a major upgrade on their stable of 'Vettes. Having said that, the '63 definitely fills a spot on the collector's shelf. Whether you have the whole set, or just key years, no Corvette collection is complete without the inimitable '63 "split-window" Coupe. The issue price is $90. (08/09/1998) This model was discontinued December 31, 2001. (08/09/1998) |
