Franklin Mint 1:24 1986 Corvette Convertible

Franklin Mint 1:24 1986 Corvette Convertible diecast car

As precision diecast replicas go this is not a definitive model. But it is a Corvette, arguably the most recognized and possibly the most popular sports car going. Issue one and despite it's potential shortcomings, it sells. A must have? No; unless you have a Corvette diecast collection. The model is somewhat primitive, but only in comparison to the most recent issues. Considering it was released late in 1991, it has only what you would expect from that year's technology and little more. I won't go into what it could or would have been if done today but I will say that as an image, it captures what the '86 Corvette was, relatively simple and straight forward.

The proportions and stance on this model seem right and the paint is well applied on my example. The wheels and tires seem to be problematic to the eye. The wheels may be too wide-set but the tires may be off due to excessive tread depth giving it a toy-like appearance when viewed from the side. So, too, do the dash gauges. They obviously look cheaply done. Overall, however, the model is pleasing, especially to an '86 owner and because FM chose a nice color in Chevy's code 35, Corvette Yellow. Would I purchase this model as a stand alone replica? Probably not. But as a Corvette collection hound? Oh, yeah! It rates 2 1/2 stars.

The issue price is $90.
