In the post-war automobile boom of the late 40's, one result of so many Americans having spent time in Europe was a new appreciation of the sports car. Ford's response to this new demand was the Thunderbird. It was designed to be a combination of European performance and American luxury. Introduced in October 1954 at a relatively low production rate, it was an instant hit. The 2-seater Thunderbird was produced for the 1955-1957 model years, after which Ford realized that a large 4-seater sedan would sell more units. Since then, the 2-seater has become an automotive legend while the 4-seater has become just another old car. In retrospect, one might ask "What shall it profit a [company] if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul"?

The Revell nod to the Thunderbird legend is the original 1955 model. The '55 design has aged somewhat better than the '56 and '57, lacking the more dated external spare and larger fins of the later models (neither of which made it to the 2002 Thunderbird). The Revell is an attractive replica with moderate detail. It has a fairly smooth paint job, with very few visible flaws. There are several chrome details like side intake vents, door handles, steering wheel and hood scoop. The hood opens and it is well painted underneath. Fit on the hood and doors is good. The engine is reasonably accurate and molded in three colors, but has no wiring or fine detail. The front wheels steer, and the undercarriage is fairly well detailed (but no brake calipers).

Interior upholstery is attractively molded in red and white on seats and doors, which makes for a striking appearance (a credit to the Ford designers). The dashboard is also attractive but under-detailed, with radio and heater controls as decals. The model also comes with a removable hard top, which is a nice touch. My main complaints are that the trunk doesn't open, and the doors are attached with the large dog-leg hinges that are visible even when closed. Still, with those classic T-Bird lines and shiny paint it looks great on a shelf. And at $25-$30 it won't break the bank!
