The 1968 Corvette, based on the 1965 Mako Shark II concept car, was actually supposed to be introduced in 1967 but was delayed due to developmental difficulties. To some, its "Coke bottle" body-style was long overdue. It looked long, low and sleek, with plenty of power in its 427 V-8 to back up that look with performance. The 1:24 scale die cast model of the 1968 Corvette by FM, painted in a stunning electric blue, looks great. The slotted, deep-dish chromed wheels, and thin-line white wall tires, are beautiful complements. There are removable roof panels for the "T" top and a decent amount of detailing under the hood (sorry, no wires) and the undercarriage (sorry, no suspension either). In spite of the decal-style gauges, the interior looks sharp with its simulated carpeting and teakwood steering wheel, as well as "soft" seats. PURCHASING TIP: be sure you check the paint job, since there seems to have been problems with rough spots. I suggest checking your purchase at the store or, when dealing with a mail order house, buy from someone you trust. If you are a collector of representative 'Vettes, this one's a must. It represents the fourth generation, and fifteenth year, of America's sports car. Display this model next to the 1953 example and you'll see how far Chevy's "wild-child" had come. The issue price was $90. DISCONTINUED 6/24/1999. (01/30/1999) (06/24/1999) |
