Though overshadowed by the fuel-injected '57 and '58 'Vettes, the 1956 Corvette marked the introduction of a new body style. This revamping went a long way to revive flagging Corvette sales from 1955, when Ford's Thunderbird stole the day, outselling Corvette 23 to 1. This die cast model of the 1956 Corvette from the Franklin Mint is up to the usual standard for their Corvette line. Since it was produced later than the '57 model, however, the refinement of a removable hardtop marks it as a newer vintage. This single feature alone goes a long way toward giving the model a sharper "look". Painted in a popular '50s turquoise, the model looks crisp and cleanly delineated. The hardtop and gleaming paint make it a standout alongside the other 'Vettes in the collection. Many collectors (myself included), looking for certain representative years, might overlook the '56. After all, why lard the collection with a bunch of similar looking models? But this particular one, due to its value-added hardtop and standout color is a worthy addition to any Corvette collector's assemblage. The issue price $90. (09/26/1998) (09/26/1998) |
