In '58, Chevrolet restyled the Corvette for the second time, adding quad headlights, 9.2 inches of body length, and lots of chrome. The dash was also redesigned to put some of the instrumentation where it belonged-in front of the driver. Critics called the car "too fussy", but the longer, heavier 'Vette turned in respectable 14-second quarter miles, thanks to a 290 bhp "fuelie." She may have been prettied up, but she still knew how to scream. FM's die cast model of the 1958 Corvette is up to the usual standard for their Corvette line. It comes with the removable hardtop, which looks so much better than the simulated ragtop. If you're as tired as I am of every other sports car coming in red, this one's painted in Charcoal (and you thought it was black), a color Chevy only offered once. The accented coves are Inca Silver. This color scheme adds a lot of pizzazz and will stand out among your other Corvettes. Though this model lacks the extras we've come to expect these days, it's nevertheless a nice looking package on the display shelf. If you've been looking for certain representative Corvette years, why not make room for one of the more elegant of the solid-axle models? Fussy or not, the '58 sure looked good in the sun, with all that chrome agleam. The issue price is $90. (01/07/1999) |
