New for 1958, the Edsel was built on two existing frame formats. The Citation and Corsair models were built on the large Mercury-based frame. The Rangers, Pacers and station wagons Bermuda, Villager and Roundup, utilized the smaller Ford-based frame. The "teletouch" shifter was a sensation. It controlled the automatic transmission selection electronically using the push buttons in the center of the steering wheel hub. Planetary gears in the column kept the buttons stationary as the wheel was turned. Other ideas originally first offered by Edsel are still seen in today's assortment of automobiles. But after just three model years, 1958 through 1960 and only 110,847 Edsels built, Ford Motor Company decided to end production. Ill-fitting parts, the car's relatively high price tag and failing sales caused dealers to drop their Edsel franchises spelling the car's early death. Issued in March of 1993 in Chalk Pink & Frost White, TFM modeled the best of the worst; the high-end Citation in a pastel color appropriate for its time. For its early diecast technology the model is done remarkable well. The undercarriage is well detailed with rear coil springs; the dash is splendid with gauge, speedometer and tranny push button accuracy. The hood and trunk open precisely and the chrome trim all lines up beautifully. This is a good conversation starter in any collection; "Remember the Edsel?" "Here's the first year, in PINK!" DISCONTINUED 12/31/1999. The issue price was $120. (07/19/2001) |
