Here's another "Superscale" die cast model from TRAX in "The Land Down Under." They manufacture predominately 1:43 scale cars but began producing 1:24 scale in 1998 with the 1953 FJ Holden Special. The 1971 XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III followed in 1999. This year, they're releasing the 1968 Holden Monaro GTS '327.'

Viewing these cars is, for me, like falling through the looking glass into a parallel dimension. They look somewhat like American cars-but different. Actually, Holden is a Chevrolet spin-off company, originally utilizing a rejected design (deemed too small for the U.S. back then) for a Chevrolet compact car.

Build quality on the Monaro GTS image is on a par with the other precision mints. This image boasts many of the whistles and bells we've come to expect these days (fully appointed engine, working suspension, tilting seatbacks and crisp dashboard details), but with "dogleg" style door hinges. I'm not too enamored with the over-large door gaps either. Otherwise, the model is a first rate miniature of a sharp looking fastback from the 60's that comes in Silver Mink or Warwick Yellow. TRAX is keeping the production low at 4,000 units, so don't take too long to make up your mind. The other two images have sold out and the prices are climbing on the secondary market. The price is $185 AUS (but with a $20 discount if ordered before August 28th). Check your local paper for the current conversion rate. Call 01161297141000 for ordering, or write them at Top Gear Pty LTD, 39 George Street, Granville NSW 2142. Remember when you call, that Australia is 14 hours ahead of us. Dig into that pseudo-marsupial pouch you wear around your waist, find that credit card and hop over to the phone to say "G'day" to those nice folks at TRAX. (08/18/2000) [The door gaps mentioned in the above review were noted in the photo on the pre-release brochure. Having received the model, however, I was pleased to see that the door gaps have been eliminated on the actual die cast and the door fit is excellent. This is one fine image!] (08/25/2000)
