L-88...Utter those three characters among aficionados, and heads shake and voices grow hushed.  It's all you need to describe the 1967 Corvette Sting Ray L-88.  An awesome package of sheer power, this 560-bhp road-burner went by the innocuous sounding option number on the order form.  Just reading the spec list raises its share of goose bumps.  All this-in a car with a wheelbase just over eight feet in length!

FM has lavished its share of detail on this 'Vette.  Eschewing the usual dash decals, they provided a cockpit with plenty of fine detail.  A lack of carpeting and cheesy looking molded seats take away from the overall look, however.  The simple addition of painted inserts on the seats would have added so much.  Though there is no suspension (a pity), the undercarriage is nonetheless well done.  The engine is nicely presented, with wiring this time.  The side-mounted "lake pipes" look sharp as well.  The ribbed alloy wheels are outstanding, with authentic lettering on the tires.  The wide racing stripe on the scooped hood, and "427" stenciled on either side, set the package off well.  There's also a removable hardtop.  As a bonus, the hidden headlights rotate!

It ain't perfect, but this model is a must have for any Corvette lover.  It's a fine representation of America's ultimate dream car. The issue price is $90. (08/07/1998)
