Though criticized over the years as being too under-powered, too fussy, and just plain too big for a sports car, Chevrolet's Corvette has nonetheless stood the test of time. By its 40th Anniversary in 1993, America's Sports Car had become a standard-bearer for our ability to design and produce performance, power and comfort-a more than 150-mph bullet priced at under $40,000.

FM's tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Corvette costs the same as previous issues, but with a decent amount of goodies this time out. No, it doesn't have a suspension system, but there is a removable targa-style top, a flip-up rear window and nifty, spring-loaded, pop-up headlights. The interior is nicely rendered for the most part, with full "carpeting" and decent-looking bucket seats. If you're looking for more than the usual decal-style dash appointments, don't look here. The dash details are the usual FM Corvette issue (with the exception of the 1963 split-window reissue). Undercarriage detailing is some of the best I've seen. Under-hood detailing is just fine as well (in spite of only six plug wires).

For the price, the FM 1993 40th Anniversary Corvette is certainly worthy of inclusion in any Corvette collection. The special ruby-metallic paint job has been replicated, as well as the complementing ruby-colored upholstery. All things considered, it's a nice-looking package for $90. (The '93 Corvette was issued with the engine wired for only six spark plugs. Subsequent models have failed to show the requisite eight.) (01/23/1999)

Editor's note. The Corvette wheel design for 1993 was a machined aluminum unit carrying a polished finish rather than the gray painted coating of the prior year’s wheel. Its center cap featured the 40th Anniversary logo in matching Ruby paint. Additionally, the ZR-1 came equipped with code QA2; 17 x 9.5 front and wider 17 x 11 rear wheels. Once in a while an FM '93 Corvette surfaces with chrome wheels. It is identical to the one with the aluminum wheels in all other ways. Apparently the chrome wheel models were the very first ones delivered, all others have the more correct machined aluminum finish. Tony Perrone 11/18/05.
