One of the diecasts in the UT Models Racing Series is this 1:18th scale '98 Porsche 911 in GT2 trim. This class races in endurance runs such as the Rolex 24 Hours or at the Daytona 24 Hours, which this car represents. UT did an admirable job of capturing the look and feel of this car. The wheel well flares, ground effects and cooling ducts are correctly replicated. Under those flares are gorgeous gold cast-spoke wheels with chrome rims. Goodyear Racing Eagle tires, wider in the rear, are appropriately used. Other UT Porsches have Pirelli tires but, after all, Goodyear IS the sponsor on this car. White paint is revealing and the smooth, flawless finish shows off the tight hood, trunk and door gaps. The very colorful graphics (representing the Belgium Racing Team) are decals but are so perfectly applied that they could pass for pad-printing. UT has put plenty of detail in this piece. Under the hood (or is it the trunk), you'll find the brake and washer reservoirs, fuel tank and the upper front suspension components. The undercarriage, like the 1:1, is a large, flat expanse with a "representation" of the 6-cylinder boxer engine and its complex exhaust system painted silver. The interior is stripped and is spartan in typical racing fashion. A full roll cage surrounds the black interior. No carpets, but the bare floor stamping includes ribbing and support bracing. A fire extinguisher, floor shifter, foot pedals, a rear view mirror (with a mirror!) and door panels are there to see. A royal blue harness, with silver buckles is embossed into the single Recaro seat. The instrument cluster is a decal but is acceptable. Around back, under the whale-tail and down-force spoiler is the boxer engine. Not much can be seen though because of the huge horizontal radiator that sits flat atop the engine. I really like this diecast. UT put a lot of time and thought into this series. Each car in the series has its own detailing, such as different tires, wheels, spoilers etc. They exhibit excellent quality, graphics and details in the $50.00 bracket and could rival higher priced models. What more can you ask. (03/21/2000) (03/21/2000) |
