The 1984 Corvette model year heralded the arrival of the much anticipated next generation 'Vette, which debuted early in March of 1983 as a replacement for the canceled '83 model year. After languishing through the seventies, the sixth generation (dubbed C4) ushered America's 30 year-old Sports Car into a new era of performance. Lighter (by 225 lbs.), shorter, and lower, performance was improved with virtually the same engine. Finally, America's Sports Car was becoming a world-class performance machine.
This being one of FM's earlier images, what does it have to offer the collector? First, there's a two-tone paint job in metallic blue that's a tad dull but nothing a bit of work with The Treatment won't cure. Then, there's a removable, tinted-plastic roof panel and a working tilt-up rear window. The interior detailing is adequate, showing more than usual dash detail, along with interior features such as carpeting. Engine detailing is decent, showing plumbing and even the various decals. Don't look for a working suspension though-this is an older state-of-the-art image. My only quibble is the rather uninspiring (if true to the original) wheels.
If you're a "Vette collector, I don't need to twist your arm to pick up this key issue. The addition of a few more whistles and bells would have been nice but not reason enough to pass on this one. After all, it's a 'Vette-right? The issue price is $90. (08/20/1999)
