The 4-cylinder 356 series Porsches of 1949-64 could keep up with most contemporary domestic cars on the highway and, despite tricky high-speed handling, show Corvettes the quick way home on the back roads. The sportiest of them all was the Speedster, with low windshield, minimalist softtop and side curtains, offered in the 356 and 356A series of 1955-56 and 1957-58 respectively. The compact but swoopy shape is difficult to capture in miniature, but FM has succeeded where others have fallen short. It sits right, the pieces fit together well, and it puts a smile on my face. Headlights, fitted with accessory mesh stone guards, look slightly undersize, but that's the only quibble. I like it best with the little top in place (a folded top is also provided), although this conceals the delightful interior. Gauges are "glazed", the soft bolstered seats are actually inviting, and all controls are in place and accurate. The tiny rear hood is graced with a photo-etched grill, and reveals a superbly detailed 1500 cc "Normal" (not "Super") engine, with twin solex carbs. The trunk is fitted with gas tank, and spare wheel/tire with leather strap. The chassis features finely detailed crankcase, transaxle and exhaust system, plus detailed working suspension with telescoping shocks. If imports intrigued you at all, this is one to consider. I give it 4-1/2 stars out of five. The issue price is $105. (07/30/1998) |
