Franklin Mint 1:24 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe diecast car

1956, a time of rock & roll, baseball and Chevrolet®. As they say, American as apple pie. Eisenhower is re-elected President and Dr. Albert Sabin develops oral polio vaccine. Elvis sings "Don't be Cruel" and "Blue Suede Shoes" and the Yankees defeat Brooklyn in the World Series. A new age dawns in American history and the automobile is part of the scene. The '55 Chevy loses that dowdy look in favor of a more urbane aura for 1956.

What instantly draws your eye to this diecast is the paint scheme and its "pillarless" Sport Coupe design. In Crocus Yellow and Onyx Black, the model is bright and striking all at once. The paint is thick and richly applied. The interior, in off-white and charcoal grey, lends a nicely appointed contrast. The dashboard has well finished detail. The steering column holds both turn signal and automatic shift lever stalks in good scale proportion. The small block Turbo-Fire V-8 engine, complete with Power Pak and Delco Freedom battery is beautifully replicated even though plug wiring and engine plumbing were not done. This is expected for a diecast of 05/1996 vintage. The trunk is nicely carpeted and features a highly detailed spare. There are replicated jacking instructions as well inside. The emblems and Bel Air insignias are well done and the grill of photoetched metal is sharp. The car 'rides' just right and has a lot of overall appeal. It conjures up thoughts of the 50's; jukeboxes, jitterbug, bobby sox and impromptu drag races. If you add the Sport Coupe to your collection, you will definitely add some sparkle.

The issue price is $120. (11/28/2000)
