DISCONTINUED 12/31/02. FM
has
just
released
the
new
1960
Corvette
Convertible
in
a Tasco Turquoise and white color scheme. This release
presents little that is different from the 1959 red Corvette
convertible released by FM nearly 2 ½ years ago (March
1995). The most significant change is the difference between the
fuel injected engine on the ‘59 model compared to the dual carb
engine in the ‘60. Upholstery has vertical seams and stitching as
opposed to horizontal in the ‘59. Scoring for the gas cap cover
is slightly improved as is the door fit on the model reviewed. The
choice of colors is a break from red.
Reviewing this model next to the older FM ‘59 model offered
an interesting opportunity to compare what new technical
advances in quality standards might have been offered which are
seen on so many diecast models today and which we have
come to expect in the current competitive market. Your
reviewer looked for such things as simulated suspension,
perhaps better trunk detail with access to a tire well and spare
tire and overall improvement of chrome detailing. There were no
detectable changes or improvements and the two models are
virtually identical with the exception of the color plan. This is not
meant to imply that the model is inferior or unattractive. It is
everything the ‘59 model is. In other words, there is nothing
really "new" here.
For the Vette addict and for the collector who must have
everything the Mint offers, the ‘60 is one step closer to having
all the year models of the Corvette and to them should be a
welcome addition. The issue price is $90. (8/97)
