DISCONTINUED 12/31/02. Motorcycles have always seemed a bit more personal than automobiles. Since everything pretty much bolts on, motorcycles lend themselves well to customizing. The personal touches an owner makes in his or her bike can say a lot about that owner. In 1971, Harley-Davidson got in on the fun by taking the frame, rear suspension, engine and gearbox from their FLH and melding it with the lightweight forks, front wheel and small headlight from their XLCH and creating their factory custom Super Glide FX.

FM's attention to detail with their 1:10 scale motorcycles is unrivaled as far as I'm concerned. All those tiny parts stand out in the larger scale. And most of the goodies have been included on the Super Glide. The wheel spokes are photo-etched metal. The foot brake, kick-starter and shift pedals work (the hand levers don't), as do the front and rear suspension. Cables, wires and hoses are present and accounted for. There's a moveable "chain" that follows the rear wheel sprocket's rotation. The seat is molded in soft, black plastic and the tire treads are authentic. The detail on the speedometer is also nice. The whole package is done up in white paint with red and blue accents and chrome galore. There's even an American flag motif "No. 1" on the center of the gas tanks. This image may not be your idea of a "hog" but it is a departure from one big road bike after another.

I'm told Evel Knievel rode a Super Glide. And why not? It was light, powerful and blazingly fast. Just the thing to jump over something, or span a gorge. The issue price is $135. (11/23/2000)
