The details are difficult to see in this small scan but some very imaginative work has gone into this diorama. I like the garage a lot. (Comments from our photographer extraordinaire Mike Martin) The details are great and there is a lot of humor if you look for it. Things such as the old pizza packages laying around, the dog looking wistfully at a jelly doughnut on the workbench and beer cans strewn around the shop. My kind of guy. The tools, motor parts, tires all have good detail and are placed through the shop just like your friendly neighborhood mechanic would have had them as well as all the grease marks on the floor. There is a bit of nostalgia about the diorama and you can almost smell the oil, grease, coffee, beer and cigarettes and buddies sitting around talking cars and girls. It is built well enough to withstand shipping, as everything was intact when I opened it. I think one of these would be a great humorous addition to any collection. I have such a diorama and it gets as much or more interest as any model in my collection.

The 1958 Corvette that comes with the garage is a repaint of the original black and white version by FM and also includes a detachable roof. Actually the clever detailing of the garage itself doesn't necessarily require the presence of a car. The diorama without a model and the corresponding decrease in price that would allow would probably help sales. A couple of nits to pick...The somewhat shallow depth of the scene crowds the vehicle a bit so if a model is going to be included a little more room would be helpful, especially to allow us to substitute others from our collections. Second, the diorama needs a more effective method of being sealed against dust. Most of us consider dust as a major evil where our models are concerned and the failure to incorporate this feature is a signifnicant drawback.

Overall, the above problems being addressed, the garage is a great idea and we would look forward to more dioramas, perhaps more garage or street scenes from different decades or even a country lane to picnic on. The issue price is $245. (04/25/2000)
