For those of you who love the '97 C5 but long for that wind-in-the-hair feeling that only a convertible provides, the 1998 Corvette Convertible is your ticket. Consistent with the well-engineered aspects of the C5, the coefficient of drag is an amazing 0.32 (0.29 for the coupe). Because of the extra-rigid new frame, the weight didn't go up due to increased structural supports. It also allows for a firmer suspension option, not possible with the C4 frame.
Detailing on the FM 1:24 scale model is on a par with the previous 1997 C5 die cast model. For those of you who like paint diamond-point lustrous, you may find the Sebring Silver Metallic color a tad on the dull side (a problem with metallic paints). The Treatment model wax will bring up the luster nicely, however. Since the convertible has a trunk (yes, for the first time since 1962), this model also has one that opens. The tonneau cowl for the top also opens, revealing the folded top inside. (NOTE: again, be sure not to miss the removable convertible top stored separately in the styrofoam box.). FM has got the simulated cloth thing down pat with its plastic convertible tops. This one looks and feels like the real item! The curious anomaly of missing half-shafts on the rear wheels is again evident.
This model is a great complement to the 1997 C5, whether you got it in black or in Torch Red. It's also the perfect gift for the guy who has the 1:1 car. (Talk about the guy who has everything-the lucky stiff!) The issue price is $90. (05/04/1999)
