If you want to just get around a city, there's the subway or the bus. But if you wish to go someplace specific and get there quickly, you take a cab. A great many of these cabs were built by The Checker Co. Few other cars, aside from the London taxis, had the passenger and luggage space of a Checker. From the '50s to the '80s, that familiar, boxy silhouette was seen on many a city's streets. This is another of FM's "theme extras" images. It has all the features to warm the hearts of collectors: a working suspension, rotating driveshaft, fully detailed flat head six, folding jump seats, and taxi-specific extras. In addition, there's a set of luggage (with optional travel stickers), a briefcase and camera, a set of stick-on license plates, a clipboard and a cabby hat. The paperwork is presented in an informative, booklet style format. The exterior is painted in traditional taxicab yellow with authentic New York City Checker cab livery. This image is a fitting tip-of-the-hat to a big city workhorse, the humble, indispensable Checker cab. Flag down a cab, tell the driver to take you to the nearest Franklin Mint Gallery Store and add this piece of our collective history to your collection. But don't wait too long, the meter's running. The issue price is $135. (11/27/1999) (05/28/2000) |
