FM's reissued one of their earlier die cast efforts of the legendary '57 Chevy Bel Air-with a twist. This time, you get to assemble it yourself! That's right. For the Tim Taylor type die cast enthusiast, it's a do-it-yourselfer's dream-a kit version of one of FM's most popular images.

When you open the lid of the big silver box, you'll see a print of the two versions of the model, convertible and hardtop. Put that aside and you'll reveal three trays filled with the myriad of assorted parts that go into your image. The top tray contains the step-by-step assembly manual. The second contains all the tools you'll need to use. The only thing you don't get is the cyanoacrylate glue (why not?). I recommend industrial strength Future Glue for automotive applications, which sets up quickly and holds like grim death. The whole process reminds me of the models I assembled as a kid. Looking at all those parts in the tray compartments made me appreciate just how much work is involved in making the images we prize.

So, go ahead. Pick up a kit and get to it. If you wish, buy two so you can keep one untouched. As for me, I'm going to relish the experience of creating my very own die cast image. When I'm done, I'll have a convertible version, in turquoise and white, of the quintessential '50s Chevy (second only to the '55 "hot one"), the '57 Bel Air. Gee, I hope this catches on. Let's see. Where'd I put the Super Glue? The issue price is $135. (02/28/2000)
