For some reason, Yat Ming has chosen to do two images of virtually the same pumper fire truck. Though they look the same, they’re not. (See the C-2 review for more complete information on Maxim.) Here are the differences: First, the hood on the C-1 has “H. F. D.” instead of “Randolph.” Also, the pin-striping is subtly different. The C-1 carries 4 hose sections on the side racks, the C-2 only 2. The C-1 carries one small ladder, and has only one ladder rack on the left side, the C-2 has 2 larger ladders, and thus two ladder racks. The C-1 has no nozzle assemblies on the rear deck behind the hose bed, the C-2 has one on either side. On the C-1, that deck is painted flat black; it’s wood on the C-2. The C-1 carries folded hose in the bed, the C-2’s bed is empty of hose. The C-2 can also be identified by a red-painted basket that sits above, and in the front of, the hose bed. The C-1 has a cylindrical copper tank behind the seat, the C-2 has a rectangular, red-painted box. The valve configurations on both pumpers are also different. The C-1’s headlight and searchlight bowls are painted black instead of red. The C-1’s wheel hubs are red instead of the C-2’s black. The last difference that I see is that the shift lever on the C-1 goes straight up, whereas the C-2’s is angled toward the seat. Aside from these relatively minor differences, the two trucks are essentially the same. It appears to me that the C-1 was more of a heavy-duty pumper than the C-2, by virtue of the fact it definitely carried more hose and appears to have had a steam pressure tank in addition to the water tank over the hose bed.
