This is the latest edition of what has now become known as the Pebble Beach Limited Edition Series. It debuted at the 1999 Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance on August 27-29 and at The Franklin Mint Automobile Festival September 12.
It differs from the standard issue mainly by virtue of the side trim colors, light over dark green, which replace the Rose Quartz and Gray Pearl of the previous iteration. The 3-D gauges on the dash are resplendent, surrounded by the gold-tone textured applique, just as in the genuine car. The exterior-matching light green and white seats provide a beautiful contrast played against the dark green of the plush carpet and dash. The front seats fold forward as they should. Two exceptionally well-fitted tops are provided just as with the standard issue. Unlike my friend and colleague Jay Engel, I will display the Caribbean with the top down to showcase the golf bag and clubs lying across the rear seat. The highly detailed chassis seen beneath the car boasts a working suspension. Even the trunk is elegant, housing the spare and the Limited Edition numbered plate. It snaps shut with spring loaded precision. On my replica the door, trunk and hood gaps are so realistic that they almost appear as non-functional. Engine detail is what we have come to expect from the best replicas now coming from The Franklin Mint and there is no disappointment here. The photo-etched grill and wheels are a delight.
Only 500 Caribbean's were built in 1955. What a fitting tribute then this Limited Edition presentation is. The issue price is $135. DISCONTINUED 11/1999. (09/14/1999)
