FM's addition of the 1999 Corvette Hardtop is a natural, since it's the third iteration of the new generation of C5's. The hardtop's the performer of the three, with faster 0-60 times and a tweaked engine and suspension. The new 'Vette has its detractors, but it's quickly proving to be a first-rate daily driver with competence on the track for the weekend racer. Without any radical racing additions, the C5 can hold its own against any of the exotic European iron out there-at a fraction of the cost. My hat's off to the wizards at Chevrolet's Corvette division for producing a world-class sports car. The quality and features of this image are what you've come to expect from FM on their recent 'Vette releases, so it compares favorably with the previous 1997 and 1998 C5 die cast models. It's painted in beautiful Nassau Blue (my choice of color for the D4C LE, by the way). The color's again a tad on the dull side (a problem with metallic paints), but is easily fixed by an application of The Treatment model wax. There are no detachable goodies this time, since it's a hardtop. The missing half-shafts on the rear wheels are present this time out. This model completes the set. In fact, FM's even releasing the '97 through '99 C5's as a three issue set in red, white and blue. Whether you order them, or just get the original issues, you'll have a great-looking collection. The issue price is $90. (07/16/2000) DISCONTINUED 12/31/03 (08/01/2000) |
