Just what makes the Z06 different from the normal split-window coupe? Actually, nothing that's obvious to the eye. The Z06 options were designed as racing options for the popular sports car. They are: heavy-duty springs and shocks, stiffer anti-sway bar, metallic brake linings, Al-Fin aluminum brake drums, cast-aluminum knock-off wheels, dual master cylinder, and a 36.5 gallon fuel tank. Oh, and full-leather upholstery. With the Limited Edition release of the 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Z06 Split-window Coupe, FM provides us with a lesson in getting mileage out of a die. Say what you will about yet another Corvette but it's a known fact that they do well with collectors. The fact that this LE sold out in three days (even quicker than last year's 1969 Camaro) is proof that FM knows its market. If you already own the fiberglass image in Sebring Silver, you're aware of the quality that went into its production. This time out the color is a beautiful, dark, metallic, Daytona Blue that really sets off the sleek body shape. In addition, the interior is done in tan instead of red. All of the details and working features are the same. My only gripe is the fact that FM opted for what basically amounts to a repaint of an image that was the second one done on this car. I know that this isn't the first repainted LE but, with just a bit more effort, they might have done a racing version in full, racing livery and thrown in a couple of goodies to boot. Nevertheless, it's a fine looking image any 'Vette fan will want to own. (05/23/2001) |
