  Playing Mantis

As has become the norm, a trip to Playing Mantis’ showroom yielded a few pleasant surprises. The departure of their car guy, Jeff Koch (who now pens for Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine) left a void that’s been filled by Mac Ragan, a legend in the little car field. The guy surely does know his way around. Fans of 1:64th will keel over when they see what’s on the pegs this year.

But we mid-scale guys will have our own little party, courtesy of PM’s Johnny Lightning lineup in 1:18. Let’s just say that I got a little tight-throated when I saw a blast from my modeling past on the shelves, and almost ready to ship: the orange "Bad News" Chevy delivery, complete with tilt-nose, orange glass, and a wired and piped engine. Man, this was a fun model back in my glue days, and the diecast is going to make a lot of us old plastic heads really happy on our shelves. Other images, based on JL’s cool Model T and excellent VW bug mold sets, are entertaining, too. But the planned ’55 Chevrolet sedan delivery and ’48 Chevy - the same way – look just ripe for custom paint, big motors, and not just a little premium license-based imprinting, as well. So does a prospective 1969 Chevrolet Pickup – but we’ll see which of these make the light of day.

That Thom Daniels car got me going. Hey, Playing Mantis – can you say "Li’l Coffin", "Boot Hill Express", or any of those things along with us? Hope so.

I’ve walked the show, eaten my share of crap convention center food, and had a chance to share a few laughs with friends on the other side of the tables. In other words, I had a ball. If all goes according to plan, we’ll be seeing some of the new models here over the next couple of weeks, and I’ll shine a light on them as they arrive. Should be an interesting first quarter.

Let’s see what wanders onto the porch over the next few days. In the meantime, happy collecting, and thanks for reading. I’m going to put my feet up.
