TRAX of Australia 1:24 2007 Ford Interceptor Concept A sleek concept car in 1/24 from Australia has captured the past and present in a brilliant stroke. Review by Rusty Hurley

Overview

Models 56 is an Australian diecast manufacturer that has one goal, to make tricked out interpretations of classic Australian cars. With that as a mission, they made a sensational choice with one of their initial efforts, an Australian gem, the Interceptor. Film buffs will recall the original Interceptor started out life as a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe modified to be a malevolent police car featured in the classic Mad Max.

This re-imagined version is bathed in high gloss black paint that has both a mirror finish and a fair amount of well cloaked orange peel. Chrome is well applied and sparkles against the ebony finish. The classic chopped Falcon lines are graceful with the car’s rear having more booty than I expected. In general, it will recall the Ford Maverick to American eyes though it’s not likely you’ve ever encountered one this styled-out.

The original Interceptor had a supercharged mill engine with menacing side pipes. This crisp reinterpretation tones down those elements with double scoop hood and in-panel exhaust output. Trans Am capable tires on the original are replaced with low profile rubber with bling-intensive rims. As is typical with design concepts, it’s missing some of the necessities like aerials and windshield wipers. On the plus side, everything that should open does and shut lines are reasonably tight. There are details better than one expects in the “street rod” category, such as a wired engine, a fairly detailed front grille, excellent interior and a well defined undercarriage. The car rolls to a very pleasing visual effect, particularly the wheels.

Two things make this particular series collectible, the unusual subject and limited availability - editions in three colors at 1,667 each to be exact. For 1/24 collectors that have been salivating over GMPs 1/18 Streetfighter series, your alternative is finally here. According to the card certifying the edition, the designer dedicates the model to his Dad. You gotta’ love blokes that wear their heart on their sleeve and dish quality in the box.
