AutoArt 1:18 Porsche 928 Available in the UK and EU

If this model proves anything, its that you can have a blue Christmas and still have fun...
Review by Bill Bennett

Overview

Porsche Water pumper lovers rejoice ! AutoArt has just introduced a new 928 Porsche into the market. The car that would not have been built if it hadn't been for Ralph Nader's book "Unsafe At Any Speed".

Porsche AG in the late 1960's had thought that they had gone just about as far as they could go with the 911....in retrospect that now seems somewhat shortsighted...... and were looking for a new approach. Where the 911 was considered a pure sports car (or sports coupe), they thought the future might lie in a more-luxurious "gran turismo" type of car with adequate space for two and a weekend's worth of luggage or a set of golf clubs.

A design study was initiated in 1971 with a number of powertrain options considered, but for noise, emissions, luggage space and the fear that rear-engined vehicles might be legislated out of existence in the US, the front-engine, rear-drive, water-cooled configuration was chosen.

The 928 was debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show with an engine rated at 237 HP World/ 219 HP North America. This car was built from model year 1978 until model year 1995.

Most true Porsche lovers never considered the car a real Porsche and its design was a love it or hate it kind of deal. My reason for ambivalence about the car was that I could never look at one and not see my father's hated AMC Pacer in the design. For all of you that I've deeply offended, please accept my sincerest apologies !

AutoArt's version is produced without a specific year designation, but appears to be an earlier model. It follows the tradition of AutoArt being nicely-made with opening doors, bonnet and boot. The doors open inside of the front fender, the bonnet has hinges that accurately mimic the full size hinges and the bonnet and rear hatch open with replica pneumatic struts. It has steerable front wheels and pop-up headlights. It comes painted in a metallic blue that once-again matches AutoArt's industry-standard for the quality of their paint and the seat cushions are "upholstered" in Porsche's distinctive "checkered flag" black and white fabric. For lovers of the front-engined water-pumping Porsches, AutoArt's 928 is a nice representation of the first iterations of this series and worth considering.

Legacy Motors has AUTOart's Porsche 928 in stock, ready to ship.
