Big Tires. Big Engines. Big Colors. Big Fun!
Review by Rusty Hurley

Overview

For the three of you that have never heard of Don Yenko, here’s a bit of the lore as to why the rest of the world is so darn crazy about his cars. Yenko owned a Chevy dealership in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He would order specifically customized cars and parts through GM’s Central Order Purchasing Office (thus the acronym COPO.)

Once the cars were delivered to his dealership and the special Yenko appearance package was applied, customers had the option of accepting the car as it was, or could have go-fast items added to the car, such as gauges, headers, fiberglass hoods, mag wheels, etc. It’s no surprise that these brutes attracted straight line racers. The legendary Ed Hedrick was one such pilot and his Yenko prostock is replicated in brilliant Daytona yellow. There’s also a Supercars appearance package version in a cool Purple, Magenta and Silver combo.

The Highway 61 base model has been thoroughly tweaked. Just look at the amped up the exhaust from street legal to cut off 4 tube braided headers. The intimidating all-aluminum ZL1 427 modeled here with vivid detail from wires to battery caps to decals. One nice thing is the car is not overdone – for examples there is less decal work on the engine - no need to impress the driver or his girlfriend I suppose. So it’s not just a repaint, something other makers could take note of and execute more successfully.

Brightwork looks good but it has been shorn from the side windows to reduce weight. A readable tach sits on top of the dash and while the interior does retain luxuries such as bucket seats and poseable sun visors, the console has been ripped out and in the trunk you'll find the spare tire has met a similar fate.

The stance is righteous with the big meats haunching up the back and S/S Cragar’s all around. Yellow traction bars with snubbers are cocked and at the ready. The graphics are a combination of tampos and decals so either model's decoration oozes authenticity. Personally love the giant Yenko logos on the door of the Hedrick version.

The Hedrick car was successful – garnering more than a few wins – in fact he was still racing in 2008 at the age of 70. The Supercars version? Well, it’s never been on a track but it has rockstar good looks and possibly the best silver paint of any model I’ve ever seen in this price range. Both models are good buys - but extremely limited - so buy them before they wave good-bye…
