In the summer of 2007 a long, proud chapter in the history of 1:43 scale white metal handbuilt models closed as Mike and his partner and wife, Joyce closed down Western Models to enjoy their retirement. From their beginning in 1973 until the end, over 200 different models were produced. These were primarily American and English cars. The wonderful models they made will be cherished as long as there are 1:43 collectors. In addition, he also made a line of wonderful airplane models.
Mike tells us that he was born in Wimbledon but doesn’t play tennis. He has worked in a lampshade factory, been a air traffic controller for the Royal Air Force, and worked as a travel agent. His model collecting hobby took over in 1973 and he formed Western Models with two friends. Besides running this company, Mike made all the 4-view scale drawings for the pattern makers to work from.
Mike was always helpful to the collector and a pleasure to do business with. For his great models and the legacy left behind by Western Models we are pleased to welcome Mike Stephens into our 1:43 Diecast Scale Model Hall of Fame for 2008.
