Most ever was four !
Reason? To make collecting more affordable ! This was when DM and FM made LEs and they sold out relatively fast. I sat on the "extras " a little while then sold off the remaining for a profit. Sometimes this netted the keeper model FREE And a profit of anywhere from $50-200+ cost effective collecting I refered to it as! I seldom if ever lost money that way. Those days lasted a good 6-7 years but that dried up and eventually I just bought one of what really interested me. Times changed and I bought a house etc
