I can quite easily transition from auto to stick, because when I was learning to drive
stick and column shift manual's were still how most people shifted. Auto was thought of as being unreliable - thinking here about early Buick slush box transmissions. My '55 De Soto two speed auto ran reliably for the two or three years of my ownership.

My 1939 Oldsmobile has a three on the tree column shift and this car presents no problems of confusion, but neither it should.
What would bother me these days is these new fangled autos like dual clutch transmissions and CVT - just weird stuff to me.
