Taking a break from Indy cars for Saturday, but
will return Monday. Today another great North American series, Can-Am racing. Can-Am started out as a race series for group 7 sports racers with two races in Canada (Can) and four races in the United States of America (Am). The series was originally sponsored by Johnson Wax. The series was governed by the rules called out under the FIA group 7 category with unrestricted engine capacity and few other technical restrictions. Just two seats and covered wheels, it also allowed both turbo charging and super charging. With virtually unrestricted aerodynamics, as close as any major international racing series ever got to having an "any thing goes" policy. There was good prize and appearance money and plenty of trade backing; the series was good for its competitors but resulted, by its end, in truly outrageous cars with well over 1000 horsepower. The Porsche Team claimed over 1500 hp for its 917/30 in qualifying trim. Wings active down force generation, very light weight with unheard of speeds made this series very innovative and a great fan experience. Here are a few examples (models may be in a variety of scales).

With the rear adjustable wing, then the fixed rear spoiler versions
