1938-1940 CADILLAC V16 limousine with Pope Pius XII by REXTOYS

This 1:43 Rextoys model is based on one of the ten Fleetwood-built limousines with open chauffeur space. This one was originally constructed for Countess Rosario de Schiffner, whose heirs in 1948 gave it to her friend Francis Cardinal Spellman. He kept it in the Vatican garage in Rome for his own use, and it was parked next to the "throne car" of Pope Pius XII.

Pope Pius XII was born in 1876 and became Pope in 1939; he died in 1958. This Rextoys model has a rather generic papal figure, complete with red hat, in the back seat. It seems to be very similar to the figure of Pope Pius XI in the 1929 FIAT 525N open limousine by Veren.

There is no record that the Pope ever used Cardinal Spellman's Cadillac. It was sold with other older cars in 1966 as the Vatican needed garage space.
