J. Allen Hynek was a real dude, but he didn't write the book.
Just skimmed the Wiki page on him - quite a career, much of which was legit astrophysics. But he was the guy who developed the "close encounter" classification system, and worked with Spielberg on his UFO epic. Get this: he had a cameo in it - near the end of the film when everyone comes out to meet the aliens, he's the guy with a beard and a pipe in his mouth!
