That reminds me of a little story. A famous movie actor was kicked by a horse when he was young...
It did some damage to the right side of his face. Throughout his career, the fellow always endeavoured to be photographed from the left, his "good side". Described as "charismatic" and "handsome", Glenn Ford became an enormously popular Hollywood star for many years.

Maybe you're on to something with the low shelf idea.
