Hi Karl,
the third option (picture) is the best, imo.

It's inexpensive compares to any clear display cases, and it also allows a hand manipulation of the models by present people at the show.
This is a very good way to show models with minimal investment and effort, as long as the models are also unboxed.

The wood could also be painted in white, as a background, to make the models standing on each "floor" or "step" even more visible.
