There's a terrific book about assembly lines---Ben Hamper's "Rivethead"
and it's available on Amazon. Ben tells great tales of working on a GM assembly line building trucks/Suburbans. Well worth getting if you like hysterical tales from the line.Between years in college, I had a messenger job at a GM plant in Baltimore, and watching the assembly line never got old. I ran errands, delivered parts in emergencies, printed the Monroney stickers, all that kind of stuff. Watching the guys on the line and seeing some of the things they did to some of those cars was a read education. Some of them would curl your hair. I did get to help the drive-away guys take the cars to the acceptance point where they were delivered to the haulers. Got to drive brand new GTOs and Malibu 396s right off the line! Great fun.
