So here's the story I got from the team at dinner in probably 1966?
Originally the backwards number was on the front so the driver ahead would see it in his rear view mirror. But the race tech marshalls ruled against that, so Bob moved it to the trunks. As a kind of friendly joke. And racers know the fourth numeral is not really even required on SCCA race cars. Or wasn't back then. So it became sort of a Group 44 trademark. On the back of the car. And I'm not really sure what year it was, but I don't want to give my age here either.
