Here's a link to a VERY short video showing hot foil stamping .
A heated die in the shape of the pattern you want to print is pressed down on a rolling strip of coloured foil (silver, gold or whatever) which is placed between the die and the object to which the foil is being applied. The foil only transfers where the raised pattern on the heated die makes contact with the surface being printed. The result is a very finely defined hot-printed shape.

In the case of model window surrounds, obviously the very brief heating effect as the die makes contact is well enough controlled not to affect adjacent paintwork or glazing.
