Very interesting Michael. An often forgotten fact is...
that the XK120 was originally intended as a low production model to test the engine which was also fitted to the new MkV11 saloon. Along with the XK100, which never made it to production, the first cars were fitted with hand beaten aluminium panels over a wood frame. These cars can be identified by straight sides to the windshield rather than the curved ones. Jaguar was taken by surprise at the success of its new sports car so the panels were re-engineered in steel, the XK100 (a four cylinder variant) quietly forgotten and the rest, as they say, is history.
