I had just turned fifteen years old.
My dad wanted to buy a new (used) car and we were acquainted with the owner of a car lot down the street. He said, "Go down there and pick a car out, one that I would like, and I'll pick it up tomorrow."

I was thrilled! Such an incredible responsibility!

I walked down to the lot and went in to see the salesman who was wiping down a beautiful pink Buick LeSabre Convertible with white leather interior. I fell in love! But--sadly it just was not a "dad car."

We settled on a relatively staid but kinda rare '62 BelAir Bubble Top in turquoise. It had a six cylinder and a three speed on the column. It was perfect. We shook hands and I told my dad about the car over dinner that evening. He told me to take my mother down to the lot and pick up the car the next afternoon.

The next day, we walked onto the lot and the Bel Air was sitting our front all shined up and wearing temp tags. While I was showing it to my mom, a man walked out of the office, got in and drove away.

I ran to get the salesman to tell him someone was taking Dad's car and all he said was, "You dad changed his mind." Then that beautiful pink convertible came around the corner--with temp tags on it as well. Mom said, "Your dad wants this car."

I was floored!

That night, over dinner, Dad said, "Keep your grades up and keep it clean and you can have it when you're sixteen." That summer, I nearly washed the paint off that car. Meanwhile, Dad settled on a new '66 Caprice with a sweet 327 and Strato Bucket seats. We were both happy!
