DUESENBERG: Celebrating an American Classic

The Gilmore Museum has put together a special exhibit featuring eighteen Classic American automobiles; Duesenberg.
Commemorating the 90th anniversary of one the Gilmore’s most famous cars, the 1929 Duesenberg J-111 is joined by other fabulous examples from around the country for an impressive display of power and beauty.
This display of these unique automobiles is featured in the Heritage Center Main Gallery.

1933 Duesenberg J-231 Convertible Torpedo Victoria
Body by Rollston Co. – New York, NY …Chassis: 2262
DESIGNED BY GORDON BUEHRIG
This is a one-off design by Gordon Buehrig and was the first Rollston Victoria Convertible to be produced. Built in 1932 for the 1933 model year, the Convertible Torpedo Victoria was a very attractive 4-passenger 2-door body designed for a yet unsold Model J chassis, 2262. The J-231 had originally been equipped with a Willoughby sedan body.
Using a similar system to the one used on Walter M. Murphy’s disappearing top 2-seaters. The Convertible Torpedo Victoria’s top was designed so that it folded into an enclosed well built behind the rear seats. This gave the car a very clean appearance when the top was stowed away. Another unique feature was its oversized doors, which provided unencumbered access to the rear seats.

Information provided by the Gilmore Car Museum.
