Good one, Dick! What would be the first few electric appliances the new electricity customer
would buy? As a boy old enough to remember, I was staying with my maternal grandparents when the "electric" was hooked up: one centered ceiling light in each room, one plug in each room.

Mama's first request: an electric iron. Can you even imagine balancing the heat from stove and/or fireplace and applying those heavy cast iron irons used for ironing before electricity? And Mama even ironed her sheets, as well as my granddad's work clothes.

Her second request: a refrigerator, which was a major cost as well as a major event.

I'm sure the electric fan came soon, but I honestly can't remember it. Maybe it was because in the southern Appalachian mountains we don't need a fan as often?

Good memories......... The radio, the tableside reading lamp, the electric clock, and on and on.
