1909 the "longest pontoon bridge in the world “The Longest Pontoon Bridge in the World,” 1909. The bridge connected Russelville and Dardanelle, and was 2343 feet long. It floated on 72 pontoon boats. Before it was built, people usually crossed the Arkansas River by ferry boat. Built in 1891, it was in use until 1921, when it was replaced by a steel bridge.
