Jack back in the day, free movement between Canada, Britain,
New Zealand and Australia was common. As an example, a friend of mine when aged 18, took off to Toronto with his mum and younger brother, worked around there for a while and joint the OPP. He stayed on the job serving last at Listowell Kitchener and retired about ten years ago aged 65.

We weren't required to have passports and could volunteer to serve in each others armed forces.
Passports were needed to most other counties and in our case these were endorsed as New Zealand Citizens and British Subjects. Very irritating to a younger chap seeking a fresh Post war identity.
All that has changed now and were are all foreigners in each others lands. But the old times of Empire do still exist, but with immigration comming from less traditional countries the same bonds of unity we once had together, are, well not so strong any more in the younger generations.
