I got my license in 1960 and sometime around 1961, before graduating
from high school, my best friend and I decided that we wanted to do something nice for our minister at the army post in Maryland where my dad was stationed. We convinced the minister that we would wash and wax his car for him one day after church, so he gave me the keys to his car. It was a '58 Plymouth sedan and when my pal and I went to drive it away, we learned to our horror that it was a three-speed on the column. After a number of stalls and false starts, I figured it out and we were able to complete our task.

I didn't drive another stick until I spotted a '58 MGA fixed-head coupe on a used car lot in 1964 and had to have it. I taught myself to drive it home after I bought it, and was hooked. Have owned many manual-transmission Camaros, MGs, Corvairs, and Mazdas ever since.
