Some of the things he did preceded him. I still remember the emotional scene when
he walked off the Joey Bishop Show in front of a million TV watchers. When he came back everyone thought he merely threw a childish emotional tantrum.

That was far from the truth.

The show's producer (and Joey Bishop) thought Regis was responsible for the show's low ratings and Regis was encouraged to leave. He thought he was saving the show (although the scene was over the top).

He came back at the request of the network a short time later.

Now I'm thinking about Jack Paar who did the same thing.
