You're kidding, right, Rand? Its purpose was to detonate mines
planted beneath the surface to clear a safe path for troops. That's why it was called a "mine roller." Tanks also had rollers with chains attached, and the tank flailed the path with the rotating chains to detonate mines. The mines didn't damage the chains or rollers when they were detonated, but they sure did damage soldiers and marines before they were cleared.
