Jim Cowen’s Automodello continues to produce some of the most beautiful models available for 1:43 collectors, and at very reasonable prices. Their latest endeavor gets away from the somewhat lesser known cars they have been doing to America’s favorite classic, a Packard. The one they have chosen is the 1938 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria in Ivory White (item #AM-PAC-38V). It is also available in Berkshire Green Metallic (item #AM-PAC-38V-BG).

Packard was still riding high in 1938 as America was attempting to rebound from the Great Depression that had seen many great makes like Pierce-Arrow, Stutz, Marmon, and Peerless go under. More popularly priced models like the Packard 110 (Six) and 120 (Eight) had seen them through the roughest times as had LaSalle for Cadillac and Zephyr for Lincoln. However, when you thought of Packard you were most likely to think of their great V-12 powered cars. Only 566 V-12’s were built in 1938 and the model was discontinued after the 1939. The engine was a mammoth 473.3 cubic inches (nearly eight liters) that put out 175 horsepower. The car rode a 134⅜-inch wheelbase. The Convertible Victoria listed for $5,320, hardly for the faint of heart in a depression year.

Whether you like your convertibles top up or top down, you will be happy with this model as Automodello has thoughtfully made the top removable and included a convertible top boot that covers the area where the convertible top folds down into the well to use when displaying it in the top down mode. The paint finish is flawless as we have come to expect from Automodello. All the outside trim and detail is complete including the blackwashed grille and plastic lenses on all the lights, front and rear. Even the exterior handles to open the hood are included and, of course, so is the Cormorant ornament that had graced Packard hoods since 1932.

The interior features tan seats, a three-spoked steering wheel, window and door handles, a detailed dash, a gearshift lever, and wood-grained sill moldings. The chassis rides on solid wheels with wide white sidewall tires, and hubcaps with Packard’s red hexagon emblem. The black undercarriage is plain except for an aluminum colored muffler and exhaust pipe.

The Ivory White version was the Official Model for the 17th Annual Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles in Canton, Ohio in September 2011. Production is limited to 499 and they sell for only $95. If you want something a bit different, the Berkshire Green Metallic version was selected as the Official Model for the 46th Packard Automobile Classics National Meet in Galena, Illinois in July 2011. It is limited to 146 models and sells for $146. If you like America’s classic cars in 1:43rd scale, I know you will enjoy this magnificent model and ask Automodello to produce more classic cars.
