Premium Classixxs 1:12 scale line of model cars has been around for a few years now, with previous releases featuring Porsche, BMW, and Mini to name a few. While those all seemed like nice models for the price, my interest was really peaked when I first saw the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing coupe in photos from the Nuremberg toy fair in 2011. Premium Classixxs has so far released four limited edition Gullwing versions include a classic silver with black interior, cream with red interior, black with red interior, and the one featured in this review, graphite gray with red interior. As of this writing, a red coupe is announced for 2012, as are complimentary roadster versions. After purchasing this replica, I can say that I eagerly await the arrival of other versions of these grand 1:12 scale Gullwings and Roadsters.

Perhaps no other vehicle is held in as high regard as the Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe, with its legendary gullwing doors, sculpted body work, and famed power plant. What really caught my eye about the Premium Classixxs release was their decision to release the models to date with prized Rudge wheels. In the 1:1 market, Rudge wheels command a premium at auctions and the ready-for-the-track style they give to the Gullwing coupe could explain why collectors are willing to pay more for a vehicle with these wheels.

This being my first Premium Classixxs model to own, I was impressed at first look. In 1:12 scale, the 300SL is huge! There is so much more detail that one can easily see and Premium Classixxs appears to have paid a lot of attention to many details the collector will see on such a large model. All of the doors open, and the gullwing doors have no problem staying open on their own. The hood opens and features a stand to keep it open, while the trunk also features a stand, but wasnít required on the model I received. The trunk features a spare wheel and tire with some tools. The engine detail is nice and theyíve packed a lot of details in the engine bay to make it presentable.

Aside from being equipped with Rudge wheels, another nice feature is the hinged steering wheel, something I donít believe Iíve seen in a 300SL model to date. The actual cars have the same feature that is said to make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle cockpit and the unique setting of the seats set further in from the sides of the car. Other operating features include pivoting front vent windows and a movable passenger seat.

The interior is executed extremely well, with correct body matching dash trim and loads of nice little chromed details and 300SL nameplate. The bright work throughout the vehicle is all done quite nicely. The only issue was some slightly loose sidepieces, but intact nonetheless. The paint quality is great, and I found no imperfections on the model I purchased. I did a quick polish for the photo session and the presentation in the display case is impressive.

The undercarriage is a single piece with some molded details. I donít know how the actual undercarriage of this car looked, but it had to have more to it than what this model has! Youíll want to be careful when handling the model, the single side view mirror is not movable, and Iíve broken it off twice now through no fault but my own.

So far, each version has been limited to 1,000 units, with some conflicting reports that the graphite gray version is limited to 500 units. While 1:18 scale offerings abound at varying quality levels, this is to the best of my knowledge, the only 1:12 scale 300 SL Gullwing available on the market as of 2012. In the 1:12 scale genre, this model is an excellent value for the money. All in all, I would recommend this release, mainly for itís uniqueness and value relative to other 1:12 scale offerings.
